She has served two terms as national vice president of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE), seven terms as president of Maryland United Specialists in Kodály (MUSIK), and currently serves as OAKE’s Eastern Division president. A veteran teacher of music students from pre-school to graduate school, her specialty is presenting practical, engaging, kid-tested materials and teaching strategies developed during thirty-five years of real-world teaching experience in the public schools.
"Two by Two and Three by Three: Teaching "Simple" and "Compound" Meters Side by Side"
Just as the best way to learn two or more spoken languages is to do so simultaneously, and at as young an age as possible, the best way for music students to become fluent listeners, performers, readers, writers, and analysts of music in both "simple" and "compound" meters is for both rhythm languages to be learned side by side, beginning with the very earliest musical experiences. In this session, participants will learn engaging songs, singing games, activities, and teaching strategies that nurture confident, skillful, rhythmically bilingual young musicians.
"In the Mode: Songs and strategies for Teaching Modal Music to Children of All Ages"
The beautiful modal songs of the folk tradition - from children's songs, to singing games and play parties, to haunting ballads - are treasures to be enjoyed and explored in the vocal music class, beginning with the very youngest students. In this session, participants will experience a wealth of modal songs, games and dances, as well as proven activities and strategies for incorporating modal music into the music literacy sequence.
"Putting the Puzzle Together:
Teaching Part Singing from Kindergarten to the Chorus Rehearsal"
Can students in kindergarten sing in three-part harmony? Can fifth graders perform Renaissance madrigals? Part singing comes easily and naturally when presented in engaging, sequential steps based on child-developmental principles. In this session, participants will learn songs, singing games, activities, and teaching strategies that lead to beautiful, confident part singing. Teachers will go home with a wonderful collection of kid-tested classroom and choral materials to use in their own schools.
